Hair Care Guide: Nourished (Wash Day + Protect Your Hair)

There’s a quiet kind of beauty that happens on wash day; the pause, the reset, the feeling of caring for yourself through small, thoughtful rituals. Whether you wear extensions or your natural hair, how you wash and protect your hair determines how healthy, shiny, and full of life it feels day to day.

This isn’t about perfection or a complicated 10-step routine. It’s about learning to listen to your hair and giving it what it truly needs to stay nourished, balanced, and strong.

Healthy, nourished hair is the result of small, consistent actions. Just like skincare, your hair flourishes with routine.

Schedule maintenance appointments every 6–10 weeks if you wear extensions. This keeps your natural hair healthy and ensures your extensions remain seamless and secure.

Between appointments, trust your stylist’s product recommendations; they’re designed for your specific hair type and method. Avoid overloading your routine with too many new products; simplicity is luxury.

Reset and Wash With Intention

  1. Think of your wash day as a ritual, not a chore. It’s the foundation of every healthy hair routine.

Before stepping into the shower, gently detangle your hair using a wide-tooth comb or extension-safe brush, starting from the ends and working up to the roots. This prevents unnecessary tension — especially important if you wear extensions.

Use lukewarm water to begin. Hot water can strip your natural oils and dry out both your hair and scalp. Choose a sulfate-free, moisturizing shampoo designed for your hair type or your extension method. Focus on your scalp first — that’s where most buildup lives.

Massage with your fingertips (never your nails) in small circles to lift impurities and stimulate circulation. This not only helps your hair grow stronger but keeps your scalp balanced and calm.

If you wear extensions, gently separate each row or section while washing to ensure your scalp and wefts are thoroughly cleansed. Rinse well, and repeat if needed.

  2. Conditioning is where nourishment truly begins. Choose a lightweight, hydrating conditioner or a silicone-free mask once a week.

Apply from mid-lengths to ends, and let it sit for 3–5 minutes. For extensions, focus only on the natural hair to avoid softening or loosening the bonds or wefts.

Rinse with cool water to seal the cuticle, this step helps retain moisture and enhances shine.

Once a week, treat your hair to a deep hydration mask or oil treatment. Think of this as a self-care moment: put on a robe, light a candle, and let the product do its magic while you slow down for 15 minutes.

  3. How you care for your hair after wash day determines how long your style and your extensions  last.

    • Towel Dry Gently: Use a microfiber towel or cotton T-shirt to blot, not rub. This prevents frizz and breakage.

    • Leave-In Conditioner: Apply a lightweight, extension-safe leave-in or serum to detangle and add moisture.

    • Heat Protection Always: Whether you’re blow drying or curling, never skip a thermal protectant. It’s the invisible armor your hair needs.

    • Drying Extensions: Blow dry the roots of your extensions fully to avoid moisture buildup that can weaken bonds. Then let the ends air dry if you prefer.

At night, protect your hair with a silk pillowcase or bonnet. These small habits preserve your style, reduce friction, and extend the life of your extensions.

When you slow down enough to truly care for your hair, something shifts. Your wash day becomes more than maintenance, it becomes a ritual of renewal.

Healthy, nourished hair isn’t just a reflection of your products; it’s a reflection of how intentionally you care for yourself.

So take your time. Let the water run through your strands. Breathe. Nourish yourself and your hair fully.

How to Know If Your Hair is Ready for Extensions

There’s something undeniably powerful about a fresh transformation, the kind that doesn’t just change how your hair looks, but how you feel when you catch your reflection. For many women, hair extensions aren’t simply about adding length or volume; they’re about reclaiming confidence, creating ease, and allowing beauty to feel like home again.

But how do you know when you’re truly ready for extensions? It’s not just about wanting longer hair,  it’s about timing, lifestyle, and readiness for a new level of care. Whether you’ve been thinking about extensions for months or you’re newly curious, here’s how to know if now is your moment.

1. You’re Craving a Change That Feels Like You

Hair is deeply tied to identity. Sometimes we reach a season where what used to work no longer fits,  a new chapter calls for something softer, fuller, or simply different. Extensions can be a beautiful way to transition without drastically changing your natural hair.

If you’ve been feeling stuck with your current look or noticing your confidence waver when styling your hair, it might be time to consider extensions. They can instantly help you feel polished, feminine, and effortlessly put together, especially when installed in a way that still looks natural and aligns with your personal style.

2. You’re Ready to Care for Your Hair with Intention

Luxury extensions require intentional care, and that’s what makes the difference between a beautiful install and one that doesn’t last.

Ask yourself:

  • Am I ready to invest in professional maintenance every 6–10 weeks?

  • Am I open to using high-quality, extension-safe products?

  • Do I have the time to brush and care for my extensions daily?

If you answered yes, you’re already in the right mindset. Extensions thrive when they’re treated as an investment, not just in your hair, but in your self-care ritual.

3. You’re in a Stable Hair Season

Extensions are safest and most seamless when your natural hair is in a healthy, stable place. This doesn’t mean your hair has to be “perfect”,  just that your scalp is balanced, and your strands aren’t overly compromised from breakage or chemical damage.

If your hair has recently gone through color correction, postpartum shedding, or major stress-related thinning, it may be worth giving it a few months to recover before adding extensions.

A stylist consultation can help determine your hair’s current health. In some cases, gentle methods like hand-tied or keratin bonds can actually protect your natural hair by distributing tension evenly and reducing over-styling  but only when installed and maintained correctly.

4. You’re Looking for Low-Stress Beauty

One of the most underrated benefits of extensions is the ease they bring. Mornings become faster. Styling takes less effort. Even a simple ponytail feels polished.

If your goal is to feel more put together with less daily effort, extensions might be the answer. Many of my clients say that the biggest shift wasn’t just how they looked,  it was how much time they saved. That extra 20 minutes in the morning can go toward something restorative: a slower coffee, journaling, or a moment of stillness before the day.

When extensions are customized to your lifestyle, they should lighten your routine, not complicate it.

5. You’re Emotionally Ready to Be Seen

This might sound unexpected, but it’s one of the most important parts.
Extensions can be transformative — and with transformation comes visibility. You’ll receive more compliments. You’ll feel people notice. You’ll see a new version of yourself reflected back in the mirror.

Sometimes that requires emotional readiness. You deserve to step into that confidence and to be seen in your fullness.

If you’re feeling a quiet pull toward transformation — not out of pressure, but out of self-alignment — that’s your sign that you’re ready.

6. You Value Quality and Connection

Extensions aren’t just about finding any stylist — they’re about finding someone who understands your lifestyle, your hair goals, and your aesthetic.
A proper consultation should feel like a collaboration, not a sales pitch. Together, you’ll explore:

  • Which method fits your hair type and lifestyle

  • How much fullness or length feels natural

  • What your long-term maintenance plan will look like

When your stylist becomes part of your beauty journey — not just your appointment — the experience turns into something intentional and luxurious, yet grounded and personal.

The Next Step: Book a Consultation

If reading this feels like a yes , even a quiet one , your next step is simple: book a complimentary consultation.

In our appointment, we’ll talk about your lifestyle, hair health, desired look, and which method would serve you best. From there, we’ll create a customized extension plan that feels natural, balanced, and aligned with your life.

Your dream hair isn’t just about appearance. It’s about alignment, the harmony between how you look and how you feel. When that aligns, everything flows.

How to Know What Hair Extension Method Is Best for Your Lifestyle

Choosing hair extensions isn’t just about length — it’s about lifestyle. The right method should flow with how you live, move, and care for your hair day to day. At The Bonhomie House Co, we believe that luxury isn’t found in excess; it’s found in harmony. Your extensions should feel like a natural extension of you,  effortless, comfortable, and beautifully maintained.

Here’s how to discover which method best fits your rhythm, your beauty goals, and your daily routine.

Before we match your lifestyle to a method, it helps to know what makes each one unique.

1. Understanding the Main Methods

Hand-Tied Weft Extensions

Wefts are small, flat rows of hair that are sewn into your natural hair using tiny, hidden beads. They create seamless fullness and can add both volume and length. Wefts are customizable — you can wear one row for subtle fullness or multiple rows for a full transformation.

  • Maintenance: Move-up every 8–10 weeks

  • Longevity: Hair lasts 9–12 months with proper care

  • Lifestyle Fit: Perfect for women who love consistency and are willing to commit to regular appointments

Keratin Bond (K-Tip) Extensions

Keratin bonds are tiny individual strands fused to your hair using a keratin-based adhesive — the same protein that naturally makes up your hair. They move and behave like your own strands, creating the most natural, free-flowing result.

  • Maintenance: Full removal and reinstallation every 4–6 months

  • Longevity: Single wear per install

  • Lifestyle Fit: Great for clients who prefer low-maintenance, long-wear results without frequent salon visits

Tape-In Extensions

Tape-ins are pre-taped wefts that sandwich small sections of your natural hair. They install quickly and lay flat against the scalp for a soft, flexible finish.

  • Maintenance: Move-up every 6–8 weeks

  • Longevity: Hair can be reused up to 3–4 times

  • Lifestyle Fit: Ideal for busy schedules or those new to extensions

2. Your Lifestyle Determines Your Method

Your daily habits matter more than you might think when choosing an extension method. Let’s walk through a few real-world scenarios to help you visualize your best fit.

If You Live an Active Lifestyle

Do you hit the gym several times a week, swim, or wear your hair up often? You’ll want a method that’s flexible, durable, and low-maintenance.

    • Best Choice: Keratin Bond Extensions
These move naturally, resist tangling, and stay secure through frequent washing and movement.

    • Pro Tip: Use a sweat-friendly dry shampoo and gentle detangling brush to keep the bonds clean and tangle-free.

If You Love a Polished, High-Maintenance Look

If you enjoy a salon visit as part of your self-care ritual, you might actually prefer the consistency of maintenance appointments.

  • Best Choice: Hand-Tied Wefts
They’re perfect for those who want maximum fullness and are happy to schedule move-ups every 8–10 weeks.

  • Pro Tip: Treat move-up appointments as your “hair ritual” — pair them with a gloss or hydration treatment for full renewal.

If You Have Fine or Fragile Hair

When your natural hair is delicate, it’s important to choose a method that’s gentle and evenly distributed.

  • Best Choice: Tape-Ins or Light Weft Installations
Both methods can be customized to minimize tension. Tape-ins lay flat, while lightweight wefts distribute weight evenly across the scalp.

  • Pro Tip: Combine a nourishing scalp treatment with your installs to promote growth and scalp comfort.

If You’re Always On the Go

If you travel frequently or prefer a “set it and forget it” kind of hair routine, long-wearing methods will suit you best.

  • Best Choice: Keratin Bonds
These extensions last several months without the need for move-ups. You’ll enjoy freedom from constant salon scheduling.

  • Pro Tip: Pack a silk pillowcase and detangling brush when you travel, small rituals keep your extensions luxurious longer.

If You’re a Minimalist or First-Time Extension Wearer

Trying extensions for the first time? Start simple.

  • Best Choice: Tape-Ins or One-Row Wefts
These offer an introduction to extensions without the full-time commitment. You’ll experience volume, movement, and softness while learning what your hair loves.

  • Pro Tip: Keep your at-home routine simple but intentional — sulfate-free shampoo, nourishing oil on mid-lengths and ends, and weekly hydration masks.

3. Consider Your Long-Term Hair Goals

Each method serves a purpose but your hair’s future matters, too.

If you’re growing out your natural hair or recovering from breakage, your stylist may recommend starting with a gentler, lighter method. As your hair strengthens, you can transition into longer-lasting options like wefts or keratin bonds.

Think of your extensions as part of a long-term care plan, not just a single moment of transformation.

At The Bonhomie House Co, we help you build that plan intentionally with scalp care, bond repair, and customized home rituals that ensure your natural hair grows beautifully underneath your extensions.

4. The Power of a Consultation

While research helps, the best way to know what method suits your lifestyle is through an in-person consultation.

During your Consultation, we assess:

  • Your hair texture, density, and condition

  • Your daily habits (workouts, styling, maintenance preferences)

  • Your dream aesthetic (length, volume, or both)

  • Your long-term budget and schedule

From there, we design a completely custom plan, sometimes even blending multiple methods for a perfect fit (like wefts + keratin bonds for a hybrid look).

It’s not just about choosing extensions; it’s about creating a beauty rhythm that feels easy, intentional, and uniquely you.

5. Your Hair, Your Lifestyle, Your Story

Extensions should never feel like high-maintenance work, they should move with you. The right method feels natural, effortless, and empowering, allowing you to show up as your most confident self every day.

When your hair flows with your lifestyle, it becomes more than just an accessory, it becomes an extension of your identity.

We specialize in helping women find that harmony between beauty, care, and individuality. Whether you’re drawn to the timeless flow of wefts, the elegance of keratin bonds, or the simplicity of tape-ins, we’ll guide you with expertise and intention.

How to Know If Your Hair is Ready for Extensions

How to Know If Your Hair Is Ready for Extensions

There’s something deeply transformative about hair extensions. They don’t just add length or volume — they restore confidence, movement, and a sense of ease to your beauty ritual. But before saying yes to new hair, there’s one question every guest should ask: Is my hair ready for extensions?

At The Bonhomie House Co, we believe that true luxury begins with care,  not just the look, but the health beneath it. Extensions should enhance your natural hair, never compromise it. Here’s how to know if your hair (and your lifestyle) is ready for the investment.

Why Hair Extensions are Great!

1. Your Scalp and Hair Are Healthy Enough to Support Extensions

Extensions rely on the strength of your natural hair. If your scalp is dry, inflamed, or overly sensitive, or if your hair is breaking easily, it’s best to restore its health before adding weight or tension.

Here’s how to tell your hair is ready:

  • You can brush and detangle easily without excessive shedding.

  • Your scalp feels balanced, not tight, sore, or flaky.

  • You’ve had minimal chemical stress (like recent bleaching or chemical straightening).

If you’re unsure, schedule a scalp analysis or treatment before your extension consultation. A healthy scalp ensures your extensions last longer, look better, and protect the integrity of your natural hair. Think of it as preparing your canvas before painting ,the healthier the foundation, the more beautiful the result.

Pro Tip: Our Nourished Scalp Treatments and gentle Arete hair care line can help rebalance your scalp and strengthen fragile strands before installation.

2. You’re Willing to Commit to Maintenance and Care

Luxury extensions aren’t just a one-time transformation, they’re an ongoing partnership between you, your stylist, and your routine.

Every method requires a level of care:

  • Weft extensions need move-ups every 8–10 weeks.

  • Keratin bonds are replaced about every 4–6 months.

  • Tape-ins need reapplication every 6–8 weeks.

If you’re ready to set aside time for professional maintenance and at-home rituals, your hair will thank you. The most seamless, effortless looks come from consistency.

At Bonhomie, we love helping guests build that ritual from teaching the perfect brushing technique to selecting the right hydrating products to prevent tangling or slippage.

3. You’re Comfortable Investing in Quality Hair and Products

Extensions are a luxury service, and like any meaningful investment, the quality shows in both the immediate results and the long-term wear.

Premium extensions , ethically sourced, double-drawn, and professionally installed, blend naturally, last longer, and maintain their silkiness through months of wear. But they also require high-quality aftercare: sulfate-free shampoos, nourishing masks, and gentle detanglers designed specifically for extension wear.

If you’re ready to invest in quality products and regular salon visits, you’ll enjoy a softer, more natural result that truly lasts.

Remember: cheap extensions or shortcuts in aftercare often lead to damage and shorter wear time, costing more in the long run. Your hair deserves the same standard of care as the luxury it represents.

4. You’re Emotionally Ready for the Transformation

This part often goes unspoken but it’s so important.

Extensions can change how you feel about yourself, how you move, and even how you show up in the world. It’s an emotional upgrade as much as a physical one.

If you’ve been longing for fuller hair or have experienced thinning or breakage, extensions can be incredibly healing. They can help you reconnect with your femininity, your confidence, and your creativity.

But it’s also important to feel mentally ready for the responsibility, the brushing routines, the appointments, the products. Think of it as entering a new beauty rhythm, one that feels soft, intentional, and worthy of your energy.

5. You’ve Consulted with a Professional Stylist

An in-person consultation is essential. This is where your stylist will assess your hair’s strength, density, and goals to determine the best method, whether that’s hand-tied wefts, keratin bonds, or tape-ins.

During your consultation we’ll walk through:

  • Your hair history and current condition

  • Your lifestyle and daily styling habits

  • Your desired length, fullness, and tone

  • A long-term plan for maintenance and care

We also talk about budgeting and extension longevity, ensuring your investment feels aligned with your lifestyle. It’s not just about choosing the right method, it’s about creating a look that supports your confidence and your schedule.

6. You’re Ready for a Season of Soft, Intentional Beauty

When your scalp feels healthy, your hair is strong, and your mind is ready for the commitment, that’s when you’re truly ready for extensions.

It’s not about perfection, it’s about partnership. Extensions work best when they’re part of a routine built around nourishment, consistency, and care.

Here we see every guest’s journey as a story of transformation — one that starts with care and evolves into confidence. Whether it’s your first set of extensions or your next chapter, we’ll guide you with honesty, artistry, and grace.

Why Scalp Health Matters: The Case for Regular Scalp Treatments

Hair Alchemy: Arete

In this blog, we’ll dive into why scalp health matters, the benefits of scalp treatments, and what you can expect from adding them into your beauty routine.

When we think of healthy, beautiful hair, our minds often go straight to the strands themselves—shiny, silky, smooth, and styled. But here’s the truth:

Healthy hair begins at the scalp. Just as glowing skin relies on a well-nurtured complexion, strong and vibrant hair depends on the foundation it grows from. That’s where scalp treatments come in. They’re not just a luxury service—they’re a necessity for anyone who wants their hair to thrive.

The Root of Radiance: Why Scalp Health Is the True Foundation of Beautiful Hair

When we think about healthy hair, our attention often goes to the lengths, the shine, the softness, the way it falls. Yet, the real secret to beautiful hair begins at the source: the scalp. Much like healthy soil nurtures a thriving garden, your scalp is the fertile ground from which every strand grows. Neglecting it can lead to dryness, buildup, irritation, and even slow growth. Nurturing it, however, creates the perfect environment for balance, strength, and effortless beauty.

This is where scalp treatments step in, not as a luxury, but as a necessary act of care and restoration.

Why the Scalp Needs Care

Our scalp endures more than we realize. From environmental stressors and product buildup to hard water and heat styling, it’s easy for the follicles to become congested. Over time, this can cause excess oil, flakiness, or inflammation, blocking nutrients and oxygen from reaching the roots.

Just as we exfoliate and hydrate our skin, our scalp needs a similar ritual of cleansing, stimulation, and nourishment. Regular scalp treatments encourage circulation, balance oil production, and remove impurities so that new hair can grow stronger and more vibrant.

Healthy hair isn’t built overnight—it’s cultivated from a foundation of consistent scalp wellness.

The Art of Scalp Treatments

A professional scalp treatment is an intentional pause, a moment to reconnect with yourself while giving your hair what it truly needs. The process often begins with a detoxifying cleanse to lift away buildup, followed by gentle exfoliation and a nutrient-rich mask or tonic to restore moisture and balance.

This ritual not only revives the scalp but also awakens the senses. The massage portion of the treatment is essential, encouraging blood flow, relieving tension, and offering a grounding experience that connects beauty to wellness.

When done regularly, these treatments can transform the overall health and longevity of your hair. Think of them as monthly maintenance for your crown, a way to keep your scalp balanced, clear, and thriving.

The Arete Approach

I’ve chosen Arete as our partner in scalp wellness for a reason. The name itself: meaning “excellence” or “the pursuit of one’s highest self”—perfectly mirrors the intention behind holistic hair care.

Arete’s formulations are crafted with integrity: clean, high-performance ingredients that work in harmony with the body rather than against it. Their scalp line is especially designed to restore vitality at the root level through plant-based extracts, lightweight botanicals, and essential oils that purify without stripping.

One of the brand’s hero products, the Arete Scalp Renewal Serum, helps soothe irritation and stimulate growth while maintaining the scalp’s natural balance. Paired with the Arete Cleansing Concentrate, it provides a sensorial ritual that feels both therapeutic and transformative. Each product supports the idea that self-care and scalp care are not separate—they are one continuous act of honoring your well-being.

A Ritual of Grace

Incorporating scalp treatments into your beauty routine is an invitation to slow down and reconnect. Whether you visit the salon for a professional service or create your own mindful ritual at home with Arete, the intention remains the same: to nourish your foundation so your hair and your spirit can flourish.

When we tend to our scalp with care and awareness, we do more than encourage growth. We cultivate softness, strength, and radiance from the inside out.

Because true beauty doesn’t begin at the ends, it begins at the root.

How to Ask for the Cut You Really Want

Always a drink on our hand and the shears in another. We live of coffee, smoothies, and drinks.

Haircuts might look simple from the outside, but behind every effortless style is a trained eye, steady hands, and years of practice. Cutting hair isn’t just about picking up scissors and trimming ends; it’s about balance, precision, and understanding the way hair moves, grows, and frames your face.

A great haircut can boost confidence, change your look entirely, and make daily styling easier.

That’s why haircutting is such a respected skill in the beauty industry, and why clear communication with your stylist is so important when you’re in the chair.

The Art and Science of Haircutting

A good haircut blends artistry with technique. Every stylist studies the structure of the head, the natural growth patterns of hair, and how different textures respond to certain cuts. For example, curly hair requires a different approach than straight hair, and fine hair needs techniques that create movement without losing volume.

There’s also geometry involved; angles, elevation, and precision lines that determine how the hair falls. A layered cut isn’t just random pieces being chopped shorter; it’s a calculated design that works with your face shape, personal style, and maintenance preferences. When a stylist cuts your hair, they’re considering:

  • Face Shape: Which shapes and lengths will complement your features.

  • Hair Texture: How your natural hair behaves and what will enhance it.

  • Lifestyle: How much time you realistically want to spend styling daily.

  • Trends vs. Timeless: Balancing what’s current with what will look great on you.

It’s this thoughtful balance of creativity and technical knowledge that makes haircutting such a specialized skill.

Why Communication Matters

Even the most talented stylist can’t read your mind. That’s why communication is the foundation of a successful haircut. Many clients feel nervous about explaining what they want or worry about being “too picky,” but your stylist actually wants to hear specifics.

Clear communication helps both of you. It ensures you leave with a cut you love and allows your stylist to showcase their expertise in a way that fits your vision.

How to Ask for the Haircut You Want

Here are some tips to make sure you and your stylist are on the same page:

  1. Bring Photos
Visuals are the best tool for communication. Words like “layered” or “bob” mean different things to different people, but a picture leaves less room for misinterpretation. Bring 2–3 reference photos and point out what you specifically like about each.

  2. Be Honest About Maintenance
If you only want to spend five minutes styling your hair in the morning, say so. Your stylist can adjust the cut so it works with your lifestyle instead of against it.

  3. Use Descriptive Words
Words like “soft,” “textured,” “blunt,” or “flowy” help guide the direction of your cut. Pairing these with visuals makes your communication even stronger.

  4. Talk About Length in Detail
Instead of saying “just a trim,” show where you’d like your hair to fall—collarbone, shoulders, or mid-back. Using fingers to indicate length helps your stylist see exactly what you mean.

  5. Ask Questions
Don’t be afraid to ask your stylist how the haircut will grow out or what products they recommend. A good haircut isn’t just about the day you leave the salon, it’s about how it evolves over the next few months.

Building Trust with Your Stylist

The best haircuts come from long-term relationships. The more your stylist gets to know you, your lifestyle, and your preferences, the better they can tailor each cut. Trust builds over time, and communication keeps that relationship strong.

Remember: your haircut is a collaboration. Your stylist brings the skill and artistry, and you bring the vision. Together, you can create something that feels authentic to you and enhances your natural beauty.

Final Thoughts

Haircutting is more than a service, it’s a craft. Every snip is backed by technical knowledge, creativity, and years of practice. And while stylists bring the skill, the client’s voice is just as important in the process.

By clearly communicating your wants, showing inspiration photos, and being honest about your lifestyle, you set the stage for a haircut that not only looks amazing but also works for you.

So next time you sit in the chair, remember this: a great haircut is a collaboration between artistry and communication. When those two things come together, the result is nothing short of transformative.

GRWM: Finding Balance in Work and Life

A Day in the Life of a Hairstylist: Finding Balance in Work and Life

Sometimes this calls for romanticizing the mundane things in life

Being a hairstylist is one of the most rewarding careers, but it’s also one of the most demanding. Behind the chair, we’re not just cutting and coloring hair; we’re artists, listeners, business owners, and sometimes even therapists (which many are probably not qualified for) so it’s best to say that we are a friend in the best professional setting. This a real multi-tasking career

It takes creativity, energy, and focus to give every client the experience they deserve, all while keeping our personal lives in balance.

Here’s a glimpse into a typical day, along with tips that make the chaos manageable and relatable.

Morning Routine: Setting the Tone

Most hairstylists start their day before their first client even walks through the door. Mornings are about grounding ourselves, preparing mentally, and setting a positive tone for the day.

  • Wake up early: A quiet morning before the salon opens gives you space to plan your day without distractions.

  • Mindset practice: Take 10–15 minutes to journal, meditate, or set intentions. This helps you stay centered and present with every client.

This for me is an essential part which I like to intermingle with “going to the gym” which I will do this right after the gym. Without this I am a little scatter brained at work.

  • Workout: A short gym session, yoga flow, or even a brisk walk energizes your body and releases tension before standing all day.

For myself, personally… going to the gym/ yoga/pilates a few hours before work helps me to wake up and set an intention for the day that will bring my best self to work.

  • Breakfast: Fueling your body with protein and complex carbs keeps your energy steady through back-to-back appointments.

What your feed the body is just as important as to what your feed your mind

In the Salon: Creativity Meets Connection

Once I am in the salon, the real work begins. Each client brings a unique personality and hair story. From cuts and color to styling and consultations, juggling multiple skills at once. We don’t usually know what the day has in store for us unless they are a return client.

Tips for surviving and thriving during a busy salon day or at the office!

  • Stay hydrated: Keep a water bottle handy to stay refreshed. It’s easy to forget when you’re moving from client to client.

  • Stretch often: Quick stretches between clients help prevent back, shoulder, and wrist fatigue.

  • Mindful communication: Listening actively to clients and clarifying expectations avoids misunderstandings and ensures they leave happy.

  • Time management: Build in buffer time between appointments to avoid running late and to give yourself a breather.

At-Home Routine: Recharging Your Energy

After a full day of creating and connecting, the evening is when I like to  recharge my body and mind. Balancing work, health, and personal growth is key to staying passionate and energized.

Here’s a simple daily hair and self-care routine that keeps me (and anyone!) feeling their best:

Hair Routine:

  1. Wash hair 2–3 times per week with sulfate-free shampoo. I personally like to wash 1- 2 days a week using Oway Moisturizing Shampoo and Aerte Conditioning Creme

  2. Use a deep conditioning mask once a weekly

  3. Apply heat protectant before styling

  4. Use lightweight oils or serums to tame frizz and add shine. This also helps to seal the ends preventing them from breakage

  5. Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase

The Mindset Behind the Chair

One of the most important aspects of being a hairstylist is mindset. A positive, patient, and adaptable attitude makes every appointment smoother and more enjoyable, for both me and my clients.

  • Celebrate small wins: Whether it’s a client compliment, finishing a complex color, or mastering a new technique, acknowledge progress.

  • Practice gratitude: Take a moment each day to reflect on your clients, your skills, and the opportunity to do work you love.

  • Set boundaries: Protect your time, energy, and mental health by knowing when to say no and planning personal days.

Balancing Life and Passion

Being a hairstylist isn’t just a job; it’s a lifestyle. The key to longevity and happiness in this career is balance. That means embracing your craft while also making time for self-care, personal growth, and loved ones.

Some days are long, some clients are challenging, and some styles take hours to perfect. But by prioritizing health, mindset, and intentional routines, hairstylists can thrive both behind the chair and outside of it.

Final Thoughts

Life as a hairstylist is a beautiful mix of creativity, connection, and hustle. By staying organized, maintaining a self-care routine, and nurturing personal growth, it’s possible to love your career while also loving your life.

From early mornings with journaling and workouts to evenings filled with reading, cooking, and podcasts, balance doesn’t just happen; it’s created intentionally. And when you approach your day with focus, gratitude, and care, every haircut, color, and style becomes more than just a service, it becomes a craft fueled by passion and energy. This isn’t just for hairstylists but for all us trying to show up as our best.

Self-Care & Lifestyle Tips Overview:

  • Exercise: 30–60 minutes at the gym or home workout keeps energy high and relieves stress.

  • Cooking: Preparing balanced meals ensures your body is nourished for long salon days.

  • Reading: Even 15–20 minutes a day of a book or article fuels inspiration and personal growth.

  • Podcasts: Listening to educational or uplifting podcasts while commuting or prepping for the day keeps your mind engaged.

  • Sleep: Aim for 7–8 hours of rest to recharge physically and mentally for the next day.

Behind The Chair: Hairstylists

Behind the Chair: Balancing Work, Life, and the Heart of a Hairstylist

Being a hairstylist is about so much more than cutting and coloring hair.

Behind every appointment is a professional juggling multiple roles—artist, listener, business owner, educator, social media manager, and sometimes even therapist.

It’s a career filled with creativity and connection, but it also requires balance and support to thrive.

The Many Hats of a Hairstylist

When clients sit in the chair, they often see only the finished product; the perfect highlight, the seamless lived-in color, the bouncy haircut.

What they don’t always see is the behind-the-scenes effort. Hairstylists spend hours learning new techniques, formulating color, keeping up with trends, and ensuring that each client gets a personalized experience.

On top of the craft itself, many stylists are small business owners. That means managing schedules, ordering products, maintaining a clean and welcoming salon environment, marketing on social media, answering messages, and handling finances. It’s a beautiful mix of creativity and business, but it can also be overwhelming without balance.

Finding Balance in the Hustle

Like many in creative fields, hairstylists often pour so much of themselves into their work that it can be challenging to find balance outside the salon. Long days on their feet, back-to-back appointments, and the emotional energy of being present for each client can take a toll. That’s why balance; whether through rest, hobbies, or simply setting boundaries, is key to sustaining a career behind the chair.

Stylists who prioritize their well-being are better able to bring energy, focus, and creativity to each appointment.

For clients, that means a more intentional and enjoyable experience every time they visit.

How Clients Can Support Small Businesses

For clients who value their hairstylist and want to help support their craft, small gestures make a big difference:

  • Book in Advance: Scheduling appointments ahead of time helps your stylist plan their calendar and reduces stress around last-minute changes.

  • Respect Policies: Things like cancellation policies and deposit requirements are in place to protect a stylist’s time and livelihood.

  • Use Professional Products: Purchasing the products your stylist recommends supports their business and also ensures your hair stays healthy between visits.

  • Leave Reviews and Share: Word of mouth is powerful. A kind review or a tagged Instagram post helps attract new clients and strengthens a stylist’s brand.

  • Show Gratitude: A simple “thank you” goes a long way in reminding your stylist that their hard work and care are appreciated.

The Heart of It All

At the end of the day, hairstyling is about more than hair. It’s about relationships, trust, and the ability to make someone feel seen and confident. The balance hairstylists work so hard to find is fueled by the support of their clients, the very people who sit in their chair and allow them to create.

So next time you book an appointment, know that you’re not just investing in a service; you’re investing in a small business, an artist, and a person who is passionate about making the world a little brighter, one head of hair at a time.

Thank You to My Beautiful Clients

I just want to take a moment to say how much I appreciate each and every one of you. Sitting in my chair isn’t just about hair—it’s about trust, connection, and letting me be part of your self-care journey. 💛

Your support allows me to do what I love every day: create, experiment, and help you feel confident and radiant. From booking appointments to sharing your referrals, every little gesture helps my small business grow and keeps my passion alive.

Thank you for trusting me with your hair, for showing up, and for allowing me to be a part of your story. I see you, I appreciate you, and I can’t wait to continue creating beautiful moments together—one haircut, color, and style at a time. ✨

The Beauty of Lived-In Color: Why It’s Worth the Investment

A modern coloring technique designed for low-maintenance clients who love effortless dimension, seamless grow-out, and lasting results.

When it comes to hair color, one of the most popular requests right now is lived-in color.

It’s the perfect blend of artistry, dimension, and practicality, giving you that effortless, sun-kissed look that grows out beautifully.

If you’ve been curious about what this service involves, why it costs more, and whether it’s the right fit for you, here’s everything you need to know.

The Process of Lived-In Color

Unlike traditional highlights or single-process color, lived-in color is customized to your unique hair type, starting point, and desired look. Your stylist will use advanced techniques like balayage, foilyage, root smudging, or color melting to create a seamless blend between your natural hair and the lighter pieces.

The goal is to create dimension and movement while keeping the grow-out soft and natural. This usually requires strategic placement of lightener and multiple steps of toning to perfect the finish. Because it’s so detailed and customized, a lived-in color appointment often takes 3–6 hours depending on the amount of hair, starting shade, and how dramatic the transformation is.

Why It Costs More

A lived-in color service is an investment because it combines skill, time, and artistry:

  • Time-Intensive: Your stylist is not just painting your hair; they are crafting a customized look that requires precision and layering.

  • Advanced Technique: Lived-in color relies on blending methods that take years of training to master. It’s not a “one-size-fits-all” application.

  • Multiple Products: The service often involves lightener, multiple toners, bond builders, glosses, and high-quality treatments to protect your hair’s integrity throughout the process.

You’re not just paying for color—you’re paying for a tailored result that looks beautiful the day you leave the salon and continues to look intentional months later.

Who Lived-In Color is Best For

This service is ideal for clients who:

  • Want a more natural, low-maintenance approach to blonde or dimensional color.

  • Prefer fewer salon visits but still want their hair to look polished.

  • Love soft, blended tones rather than high-contrast highlights.

  • Are okay investing more time and money upfront in exchange for long-lasting results.

If you love the idea of hair that looks amazing for months with minimal upkeep, lived-in color is made for you.

Maintenance After the Service

While lived-in color is designed to grow out seamlessly, it does require some maintenance to keep it looking its best:

  • Toning Appointments: Every 8–12 weeks, a toner or gloss refresh can help keep brassiness at bay and restore shine.

  • Quality Haircare: Using sulfate-free shampoos, hydrating masks, and bond-repair treatments will maintain the health of your hair and the vibrancy of your color.

  • Heat Protection: Always protect your strands from hot tools to prevent breakage and fading.

  • Annual Refresh: Most clients only need a full lived-in color service once or twice a year, with glosses in between to maintain tone.

The Bottom Line

Lived-in color is more than just a coloring service—it’s an investment in a customized, long-lasting look that saves you time in the long run. While the initial service may cost more, the payoff is fewer visits to the salon, effortless grow-out, and hair that looks stunning every day.

Why Lived-In Color is So Popular

Lived-in color has quickly become one of the most requested salon services because it combines beauty with practicality. Here’s why clients love it so much:

    1. Effortless and Natural-Looking
Instead of obvious regrowth lines or high-contrast highlights, lived-in color blends seamlessly. It mimics how hair naturally lightens in the sun, which makes it flattering and easy to wear.

    2. Low Maintenance
Traditional blonding often requires touch-ups every 6–8 weeks. With lived-in color, many clients only need a full service once or twice a year, with toners or glosses in between. This saves both time and money over the long run.

    3. Customized to Each Client
No two lived-in colors are exactly the same. Stylists tailor the placement, tone, and dimension to suit your hair type, skin tone, and lifestyle. That customization feels more luxurious and personal.

    4. Soft Grow-Out
One of the biggest stressors with color is harsh regrowth. Lived-in color grows out gradually and softly, so even months later, your hair still looks intentional and put-together.

    5. Modern, Timeless Appeal
It’s trendy, but not in a way that feels fleeting. The sun-kissed, dimensional look is always in style, making lived-in color a safe choice for clients who want longevity in their look.
